Recently, Southwest Airlines announced a policy change, effective January 27, 2026. While they previously had an open seating arrangement, allowing passengers to choose any available seat, they are now introducing a new boarding process. More notably, the airline is addressing the issue of passengers who may require more than one seat.
Southwest has stated that customers whose size encroaches upon neighboring seats will be required to purchase an additional seat. This policy, which was previously a suggestion, will become mandatory, with passengers needing to buy the extra seat and pay any associated fees at the airport.
Charlamagne, discussing this on "The Breakfast Club" radio show, didn't mince words. He stated, "If you are too big for one seat, then you just got to buy two seats. Don’t act like the plane is doing something to you. You know how big you are!" He went on to draw parallels with tall people who often need to purchase extra legroom.
