A record-breaking crowd of 4,686 fans turned out to support the University of Wyoming wrestling team as they took on the mighty No. 1 Penn State in a highly anticipated dual meet. The Cowboys put up a valiant effort, but ultimately fell to the Nittany Lions by a score of 40-7. Despite the loss, the team and their supporters had an unforgettable experience, with a passionate atmosphere that made the event truly special.
One of the standout performances of the night came from Joey Novak, who secured two wins against ranked opponents. Novak's victory over No. 8 Connor Mirasola via major decision and his win over No. 9 Cole Mirasola were highlights of the evening. These wins showcase the team's depth and talent, with Novak moving to 7-2 on the season and Carroll now 7-3 with four ranked wins.
However, the dual wasn't all smooth sailing for the Cowboys. Brothers Luke and Gabe Willochell both took early leads in their bouts, but ultimately lost via fall to No. 5 Marcus Blaze and No. 1 Shayne Van Ness, respectively. John Alden also gave the crowd something to cheer about with his second-period takedown, but he ended up losing via decision to Nate Desmond.
The task was indeed a tall one for the Pokes all night, as Penn State boasted the top-ranked guy at half of the weight classes and four others were ranked in the top 10. Despite the loss, the team and their supporters can take pride in their performance and the record-breaking crowd that turned out to support them.
The Cowboys are back in action next weekend, traveling to the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 21. The team will look to bounce back and continue their strong season, with a focus on building on the momentum from this exciting dual meet.
