On your iPhone, navigate to Settings, then Privacy and Security, scroll to the bottom, and tap Lockdown Mode. Enter your passcode, not a facial or fingerprint scan, to activate. The device will restart, and you'll need to use your passcode again to unlock. A similar process applies to MacBooks via the System Settings menu.

Biometrics vs. Passcodes: Which is Safer?
Experts argue that passcodes offer better protection against law enforcement than biometrics. While facial or fingerprint recognition is convenient, it can be compelled by authorities, forcing you to unlock your device. Passcodes, on the other hand, provide an extra layer of security, as they can't be coerced as easily.
In the case of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson, the FBI couldn't compel her to provide passcodes but had the authority to use her biometrics. Ultimately, agents were able to unlock her MacBook with her fingerprint.
The Impact of Lockdown Mode on Your Phone
When Lockdown Mode is activated, some apps and features may behave differently. Websites might load slowly or not function properly, and some images and web fonts might be missing. In Messages, most attachments are blocked, and links and previews are unavailable. FaceTime calls from unknown numbers are also blocked.
In Photos, location information is stripped from shared photos, and shared albums are removed. Focus mode is affected, and there are tighter restrictions on connecting to unsecure Wi-Fi networks or other devices.
In my personal experience, I noticed some apps warning about potential disruptions. One news app changed its font, and photos on certain websites didn't load, replaced by a question mark. The most significant disruption occurred when I tried to check into the gym using my phone's camera to scan a QR code, which didn't work in Lockdown Mode.
Disabling Lockdown Mode
To turn off Lockdown Mode, follow the same steps used to activate it. Enter your passcode, and the phone will restart.
