Cougar Spotted in Vernon Neighborhood | Safety Tips & Wildlife Encounter Guide (2026)

A Close Encounter with a Cougar in Vernon

Imagine waking up to a security camera footage of a majestic yet potentially dangerous visitor - a cougar! This is exactly what happened to Jason Keis, a Vernon resident, who had an unexpected guest overnight.

The cougar, a symbol of strength and wilderness, was captured on camera wandering through Keis' yard in the 8900 block of Eastside Road. This incident sheds light on the fascinating yet controversial coexistence of humans and wildlife, especially in regions like the Okanagan, known for its diverse wildlife population.

But here's where it gets controversial... While cougars are native to the Okanagan and are a common sight throughout the region, according to the BC Conservation Service, attacks on humans are extremely rare. However, animal expert Pete Wise, based in Vernon, emphasizes the importance of caution and awareness.

Wise, an experienced backcountry explorer, carries a big stick and bear spray for protection. He advises that if you encounter a cougar, you should make a lot of noise and be highly aggressive. "You want to yell at them, throw things at them. Absolutely do not play dead; a cougar will eat you," he warns.

And this is the part most people miss... Running can trigger a prey response from the cougar, leading to a potentially dangerous situation. Wise suggests backing away, making yourself look as big as possible, and maintaining a calm yet assertive presence.

So, what should you do if you encounter wildlife like a cougar? Report it to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277. But remember, these encounters are rare, and with the right knowledge and precautions, we can coexist peacefully with these magnificent creatures.

What's your take on this? Do you think we should be more concerned about wildlife encounters, or is it a natural part of living in regions like the Okanagan? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
