The Bathurst 12-Hour Race: A Thrilling Motorsport Extravaganza!
The annual Bathurst 12-Hour race is upon us, and the excitement is palpable! This year's event, held on a slightly rainy Thursday, featured a parade of all 35 participating cars, followed by an autograph session. But the real spectacle was yet to come.
A Global Gathering of Racing Elites:
The race, part of the SRO Motorsports Group's Intercontinental GT Challenge, is a showcase of the largest grid of GT3 cars since 2020. It's a true international affair, attracting teams and drivers from across the globe. And this year, the competition is fiercer than ever.
Team Changes and New Entrants:
Tsunami RT's Porsche 911 GT3 R will be driven by a trio of drivers after Daniel Gaunt's last-minute withdrawal. Meanwhile, teams like Team WRT and JMR Johor Racing have arrived fresh from the Asian Le Mans Series, where they competed in the final rounds in the United Arab Emirates.
And here's where it gets interesting: The Vincent Vosse-led WRT squad, last year's winners, recently raced in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the Michelin 6H Abu Dhabi, and the 24H Dubai, where they claimed victory with a BMW M4 GT3 EVO. But wait, there's more! They also participated in the Asian LMS races, featuring renowned drivers like Porsche's Laurin Heinrich, Klaus Bachler, BMW's Augusto Farfus, Ferrari's Davide Rigon, and Mercedes-AMG's Lucas Auer and Fabian Schiller.
The Corvette Conundrum:
JMR, despite a recent crash, is introducing a brand-new Corvette chassis for its Pro-Am class entry, air-freighted from the U.S. But there's a twist: one of their Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R entries had to be withdrawn after a testing crash at Yas Marina Circuit, and another was written off earlier at Sepang International Circuit. Will this new chassis bring them better luck?
The Mercedes-AMG Evolution:
The 75 Express Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, a new chassis, is making its Bathurst debut. Its previous iteration, the 2023 overall winner, has been retired, but the team is back with a new car, hoping to continue their winning streak at Mount Panorama.
A Record-Breaking Field:
This year's IGTC Independent Cup category features a record six entrants, including defending champion Kenny Habul. Habul, who suffered a back-breaking crash at the 2023 24 Hours of Spa, has vowed not to return until safety improvements are made. Instead, he plans to debut at the Nürburgring 24, a notoriously challenging race.
The Driver's Perspective:
Habul, in an exclusive interview, shared his thoughts on the upcoming challenge: "I think the section across the top of Bathurst is the most difficult in the world. But I want to do it (Nürburgring 24). It's a driver's rite of passage." He also revealed that they are still finalizing the driver lineup and class for the race, as the Nürburgring has its own unique rules.
Spare Chassis and Strategic Changes:
Several teams have spare chassis on-site, including HRT Ford Racing, who is entering a solo Ford Mustang GT3. Meanwhile, Chaz Mostert replaces Craig Lowndes in the Scott Taylor Motorsport Mercedes-AMG lineup, finally sharing a car with fellow Supercars racer Cam Waters after a crash prevented them from doing so in the 2015 Bathurst 1000.
Mostert, who sat out the 2025 GT World Challenge Australia season to focus on his GT4 team, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to race with Waters again. He also shared his passion for the GT world and his commitment to his team's growth.
A Legend's Absence:
Notably, seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner and two-time 12-Hour winner Craig Lowndes is absent from the grid. Lowndes, a GM ambassador, had reportedly enquired about driving for JMR, but the team opted for their regular lineup, including GM factory drivers Alexander Sims, Earl Bamber, and Nicky Catsburg.
A Star-Studded Affair:
The race also attracts celebrities, with Rubens Barrichello supporting his son Eduardo's debut in the Heart of Racing by SPS' Mercedes-AMG. Additionally, longtime commentator Richard Craill joins the Repco Supercars broadcast team, marking a new era in race commentary.
The Action Unfolds:
The Bathurst 12-Hour race action begins on Friday with four practice sessions, two of which are exclusive to FIA Bronze-rated drivers. The opening practice will be a thrilling spectacle, setting the stage for a weekend of high-octane drama.
