In a heartwarming turn of events, newly-engaged Australian tennis players Maddison Inglis and Jason Kubler have both successfully qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open, achieving this remarkable feat within just one hour of each other.
Jason Kubler showcased his resilience as he rallied back from a set down against his opponent Alexander Blockx. The match took a sudden turn when the German player retired while Kubler was ahead with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 1-0. Reflecting on his journey, Kubler shared, "I wasn't sure if I would be back. I played at the Open a couple of years ago, and it’s been quite the roller coaster since then. But fortunately for me, today, it worked out, and I get another chance, which is nice."
Following his victory, Kubler had the joy of witnessing his fiancée Maddison Inglis secure her spot in the main draw by defeating Germany's Tamara Korpatsch with a score of 6-4, 6-4. This win marked Inglis's first appearance in the main draw since 2022. "To see her get over the hump and qualify — it's just so cool," Kubler exclaimed. "I would actually say I felt happier watching her do that than I did at the end of my match."
Interestingly, the couple has been playing simultaneously throughout the qualifying rounds, and Inglis initially thought Kubler had lost when she saw he dropped the first set. "I saw he lost the first set, and then he was over to my match not too much longer after, so I was like, 'oh bugger, he must have lost in straight sets,'" she recounted. She added, "It was a really special moment. It’s pretty crazy. It’s not every day you both get through qualifying and are in the main draw of a grand slam."
Kubler, returning to the main draw for the first time since 2024, faces a significant challenge as he goes up against world number 29 Francis Tiafoe in the opening round. Meanwhile, Inglis will compete against fellow Australian Kimberly Birrell.
In addition to their inspiring stories, Dane Sweeny, known for his scrappy play style, also fought his way into the main draw, and Storm Hunter made a commendable comeback following a serious injury. This year marks a historic achievement, as it is the first instance since 1992 that four Australian players have advanced to the Australian Open through the qualifying rounds. In total, fans will be able to support 21 Australians — 11 men and 10 women — in the two main draws this year.
