A 33-year-old kitchenhand, Cameron Clark, is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly attacked a waitress at a Brisbane leagues club hours after being dismissed. Police say he was fired from Easts Leagues Club in Coorparoo around 2:00 pm yesterday for inappropriate behaviour toward a 20-year-old colleague.
Authorities allege Clark returned to the club just after 5:00 pm, armed with a carving knife, and targeted the woman in a hallway. She sustained stab wounds to the head, hands, and wrist. One of the club’s chefs stepped in to shield her and was stabbed in the hip as she tried to escape. Clark then reportedly pursued the woman into the dining area and attacked her again in front of dozens of patrons.
Several bystanders intervened, restraining Clark before police arrived. Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham described the incident as a life-changing event for everyone present, noting that those injured and those who witnessed it will carry memories of what happened for a long time.
The injured waitress, a Norman Park resident, underwent surgery and is listed in stable condition. Clark remains hospitalized under police guard and has been charged with one count each of attempted murder, unlawful stalking, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, unlawful wounding, and going armed to cause fear. He is due in court on Monday. A 61-year-old chef who intervened was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Easts Leagues Club indicated it reopened the day after the attack and is actively supporting affected staff.
