A shocking £70 million pension scam has been exposed, with three men admitting their involvement in a fraudulent tree-planting scheme. This scheme, which took advantage of recent pension reforms, has left thousands of victims in its wake.
The Scam Unveiled
Matthew Pickard, Stephen Greenaway, and Paul Laver have pleaded guilty to fraudulent trading, specifically targeting people's pensions through their company, Ethical Forestry Limited. The business model was simple yet deceptive: cold-calling potential victims and offering a pensions review, luring them into investing their hard-earned money in tree plantations in Costa Rica.
But here's where it gets controversial: investigators claim these men had no intention of actually caring for or harvesting the timber. It was all a front, a clever ruse to dupe unsuspecting individuals out of their retirement funds.
The Fraud Unravels
Jason Williams, who led the investigation at the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), shared his insights: "Whether these individuals started with fraudulent intent or if it evolved over time, we may never know." This statement leaves room for interpretation and raises questions about the initial motivations behind the scheme.
The SFO revealed that Ethical Forestry's call center in Bournemouth employed several hundred employees, all working to convince people to transfer their pensions to the fraudulent scheme. Those who agreed were trapped in a 'closed loop,' with the firm offering advice being paid a commission for each referral back to Ethical Forestry.
Victims' Stories
One such victim, Julie Bertelli, shared her experience. She had wanted to invest some inheritance money for her retirement and was lured by the promise of ethical investment in Costa Rica, a country making strides in reversing deforestation. However, the reality was far from the glossy brochures and seasonal updates she received.
When Julie tried to locate her investment online, she found nothing. "I was shocked and appalled... I couldn't believe I'd been scammed out of so much money," she said. Her £12,000 investment, though considered small by the SFO, was a significant loss for her.
The Scheme's Downfall
By 2012, it was evident that the scheme was unsustainable and would never pay back investors. Instead of shutting down, the directors continued to gather more money, creating a Ponzi scheme, and using a portion of the incoming cash to make small payments to existing investors, a classic tactic to keep the scam afloat.
Most of the money, however, went straight into the pockets of the directors, who also invested in complex tax avoidance schemes. According to Jason Williams, "During the period, the three individuals withdrew £15 million." This money funded lavish lifestyles, with luxury houses and supercars, but little was left for the victims.
The Impact and Aftermath
Ethical Forestry Limited was not the only company targeting people's pensions, but their scheme was one of the largest and most complex, according to the SFO. Watchdogs have been active in warning people of such risks, even featuring a storyline in the BBC soap Eastenders, in collaboration with Scam Smart.
The Pensions Regulator reports a decline in pension liberation fraud, but this provides little comfort to victims like Julie Bertelli. Now living on her state pension, she accepts the likelihood of recovering her lost funds is slim to none. "It's gone... a tragic loss," she said, expressing her anger and relief that justice has been served.
